American River Rendezvous Celebrates Our Natural and Cultural History

May 1, 2006 – Coloma.  Headwaters Institute will offer their 9th annual American River Rendezvous on Monday, June 12, 2006. Teaming up for the first time with the Coloma-Lotus Chamber of Commerce’s popular TrailFest, the Rendezvous will take place from 9am to 4pm at Earth Trek’s camp on the South Fork of the American River.

The American River Rendezvous strives to continue the historical tradition of Native Americans, trappers and miners to gather along the shores of important waterways to share food and exchange news and information. River guides, outdoor professionals, educators and members of the local community are invited to come together to share in discovering the natural and cultural history of the American River canyons.

A screening of the film Rio del Oro will begin the day’s program, followed by a variety of experiential activities, presentations and discussions focusing on the importance of the American River watershed to its human, plant and animal inhabitants. Friends of the River, the American River Conservancy and El Dorado County will be among the presenters, and participants will be entertained by Alan Bielharz’ “Miners Hat” performance and Kim Petree’s Native American storytelling. Sponsors include American River Conservancy, Earth Trek, Sierra Nevada House, El Dorado County, Friends of the River and Marmot Mountain Works.

The American River Rendezvous and the American River TrailFest will take place at Earth Trek’s camp in River Park Village, located on Hwy 49 in Lotus at the bridge over the South Fork of the American River. For American River Rendezvous program and registration information, call Tessa Sibbet, (530) 391-5213 or email tsibbs@gmail.com. For information about TrailFest, which takes place from 6pm to 10pm, visit http://www.coloma.com/trailfest/ or call (530) 621-1224.

For the past eleven years, the Headwaters Institute and its associated network of educators has been  the premier provider of natural history, conservation, and interpretative trainings for professional guides. These seminars encourage and promote a deeper public understanding of the importance of healthy rivers and their watershed ecosystems from ridgeline to coastline.
